Everywhere you turn you’ll find diet books, ads for diet programs, detox programs and wonder supplements that promise rapid weight loss. The reality behind some of these products is companies that take advantage of obese people at their most vulnerable in order to get their share of a lucrative business, that according to a U.S. News and World Report article, is worth 60 billion.

In spite of a market flooded by diet products and programs, obesity and overweight are on the rise or halted at a high number. There are many reasons behind this phenomenon, one of the major ones is the enormous amount of high calorie food available everywhere. Much of the industrialized food available today contains high levels of sugars, sodium, fat and refined flours, but lacks real nutrients. This reality places us in an obesogenic environment, carefully designed to keep us hungry for more and where keeping healthy is a constant struggle.

To fix the problem many people opt for fad or restrictive diets. The most traditional of routes is the hypocaloric diet; eating small amounts of bland food and getting plenty of exercise. Another popular trend is eliminating food groups completely, whether they be carbohydrates, animal products, fats, etc. The problem with that is that the body responds by triggering compensatory mechanisms that slow down your metabolism and increase hunger. In other words, the body says “I’m going to starve if this food restriction continues, so I better store everything I can and eat more at the next opportunity”.

Restrictive diets that eliminate carbohydrates almost completely may work in the beginning, but after a while people tend to rebound as soon as they realize they can’t spend the rest of their life without eating a piece of toast or some oatmeal. Whatever the restrictive diet is, chances are that as soon as you resume regular social and eating patterns, the weight will creep back up. This reality is what’s behind yo-yo dieting, the apparent addiction to fad diets and the tendency to believe that the next miracle product will finally make the difference.

We have become expert dieters, but fall short when it comes to the long term results we all want.

According to the Institute for the Psychology of Eating there are three key factors responsible for diet failure.

Our biology. The body identifies food restriction as a stress factor and under stressful conditions it will produce hormones that slow down the rate at which we burn calories; the body is really good at conserving energy to ensure its survival in a situation of perceived danger, such as running out of food!

Diets do not create sustainable change. Most of us can change our way of eating for a short period of time, but to create long term changes we have to learn about nutrition, understand why we eat like we do, know what’s behind our food choices and think about the mentality we bring to the table.

Diets are no fun! All diets require some kind of deprivation, often there are lists of foods that you can and cannot eat and you will need a lot of will power to stick to the rules. But an overly restrictive plan that doesn’t address our relationship with food is a sure fire way of increasing stress, and we already know that stress hinders weight loss.

To follow and enjoy a healthy diet you have to understand all the wonderful benefits it will provide for you and look into the psychology behind your eating patterns. Choose a sensible plan, work on your relationship with food and find pleasure in the foods that give you energy and improve everything from your appearance to your mood; this will give you the best chances of achieving a naturally healthy weight while being in peace and happy with your body.

All this information may make you think that long term weight loss is practically impossible and we didn’t even touch on the genetic pre-disposition some people may have.
