Types Of Surgery

Depending on the personal characteristics and needs of patients the physician will choose the type of surgery to be performed according to the LIMARP bariatric program.

The patient will be clearly informed on the techniques to be used, advantages and any disadvantage there may be.

Bariatric surgery can restrict the following:

1) The amount of food that the stomach can store (restrictive procedures).
Examples: gastric lap-band, gastric plication, gastric sleeve.

2) The ability of the small intestine to absorb nutrients (malabsorption procedures).

Examples of these surgeries are: Gastric Bypass, Minigastric Bypass and Duodenal Switch.

Depending on the case and needs of the patient we suggest and select the type of surgery to perform according to LIMARP’s Bariatric Program .

Bariatric surgery may be done in two ways: open or laparoscopically. The open technique is the traditional one. It is done through a long incision. The incision allows the surgeon to see inside the body and perform the surgery.

The laparoscopic technique uses several small incisions that can measure anywhere from 5 mm to a centimeter. Long tubular instruments are inserted through the incisions and, aided by a camera, Dr. Pompa can see inside the patient’s body and perform the surgery. This technique can be used in 99% of the cases.
