Postoperative Nutrition

The nutritional guides provided by the LIMARP team apply similarly in gastric banding, plication Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve Gastrectomy, with some variations that we will explain in detail.

To obtain the expected results of surgery, it is essential to make changes in eating habits in the long run because the size of the stomach is greatly reduced after surgery.

The amount, the type of food and liquids that can be consumed will be limited. Food choice is very important due to dietary restrictions.

It may be that after surgery the patient has a reduce tolerance for food high in sugar, fat or fiber, as these can cause abdominal pain and discomfort. Before and after the surgery, there should be a series of appointments with the dietitian, who will guide the patient through all the changes that are to be made.

Depending on the type of surgery performed, it is common not to be able to eat or drink one to three days after surgery, to allow them to carry out proper healing.

After completion of this period of recovery, we will be gradually making changes to your diet. Proceed to ingest liquids, then be allowed to eat baby food, and once the stomach can tolerate the diet, solid food can be added

The stages and duration of the diet after surgery are:

  • One to seven days of clear liquids.
  • A week of full liquids.
  • Three to four weeks of eating baby food (food consisting of a soft paste or thick liquid) and protein shakes.
  • You must follow a diet of soft foods for two weeks. This diet consists of small pieces of food that can easily be chewed, such as minced fish.
  • For two weeks you'll be eating a diet consisting mainly of small pieces that are easily chewed, like and diced chicken. This is called a soft diet.
  • At this stage, you can eat normal foods. Note that this transition in the diet varies from person to person. It has been observed that some patients can eat foods with more consistency, greater quantities and / or more types of food, between three and six months after surgery.
